Barbara Hepworth died in a fire in her studio on 20 May 1975. The fire was caused by a defective electric heater and spread rapidly through the studio, which was full of wood and canvas. Hepworth was found dead in the studio by her husband, John Skeaping. The fire destroyed many of her works, including some of her most important sculptures.
