Hepworth died on 20 April 1975 in a fire in her studio in St Ives. She had been working there with her assistant and former lover, Bryan Wynter. Hepworth had gone outside to speak to a friend when the fire broke out, and was unable to return. The fire destroyed many of her sculptures, including some of her best-known works.
