Barthélemy Boganda was active during the period when the area was part of French Equatorial Africa. Boganda was a Catholic priest and politician who was born in Oubangui-Chari (now known as the Central African Republic) in 1910. He became involved in politics in the 1940s and was elected to the French National Assembly in 1956.
