Bartholomew Roberts, the renowned pirate captain, met his end during a fierce naval engagement off the coast of Cape Lopez, Gabon, in February of 1722. While bravely leading his crew in battle against the British warship Swallow, under the command of Captain Chaloner Ogle, Roberts was struck and mortally wounded by grapeshot.
