Bartolomé de las Casas was appointed Bishop of Chiapas in 1544, but he was forced to leave the position after only two years because of the hostility of the Spanish colonists. He was a strong advocate for the rights of the indigenous people of the Americas and believed that they should be treated as equals to the Spanish.
