Bartolomé de las Casas was a Spanish priest, historian, and social activist who was one of the first Europeans to advocate for the rights of the indigenous peoples of the Americas. In 1514, he was appointed as the first Protector of the Indians, a position in which he worked to protect the indigenous peoples from exploitation by the Spanish colonists.
