Bartolomeu Dias was a Portuguese explorer and navigator who was the first European to round the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa in 1488. This discovery opened up a new sea route to India and the East Indies, and Dias was later knighted by King John II of Portugal for his achievement.
