Batu's Khan ulus was located in what is now Russia and Kazakhstan. To the north, it bordered the Arctic Ocean. This was a vast and unforgiving landscape, with few resources and harsh conditions. The people who lived in this area were nomadic and had to be able to adapt to the harsh environment.
