Batu Khan passed away in 1255. Batu was the grandson of Genghis Khan and the founder of the Golden Horde, a Mongol empire that ruled over the Pontic-Caspian steppes and parts of Eastern Europe. He was a successful military leader and expanded the Mongol Empire into Eastern Europe, defeating the Russian princes at the Battle of Kalka River in 1223. He died in 1255 at the age of 48.
