Béla IV, king of Hungary, escaped from the battlefield after the Mongols annihilated his army in the Battle of Mohi in 1241. This led to the Mongols taking control of much of Hungary and the rest of Central Europe for a short time. Béla eventually managed to drive the Mongols out, but Hungary was left in ruins.
