Benito Juárez was a Zapotec. The Zapotecs are an indigenous group of Mesoamerica, who lived in what is now the Oaxaca region of Mexico. Juárez was born in a small village in the Oaxaca region, and his parents were Zapotec speakers. Juárez learned Spanish as a second language, and he went on to become a lawyer and a politician.
