Benni McCarthy played professionally for 15 years before starting his coaching career. He made his professional debut in 1995 for Ajax Cape Town, and went on to play for a number of clubs in Europe, including Porto, Blackburn Rovers, and West Ham United. He also represented South Africa at the international level, and was named the Confederation of African Football Player of the Year in 2004.
