Three times, Freyberg faced defeat as a commander during WWII. His first setback occurred in Greece in 1941, where his forces were overwhelmed by the German invasion. Subsequently, in Crete in 1941, his troops suffered heavy losses and were forced to evacuate. Finally, in North Africa in 1942, his command was defeated by Rommel's Afrika Korps at the Battle of Gazala.
