Per Ahlmark succeeded Ohlin as the leader of the People's Party. Ahlmark had been a member of the party since 1950 and had served as its youth leader from 1955 to 1960. He was elected leader of the party in 1967 and served in that position until 1978. During his time as leader, the party's support declined and it lost its position as the largest party in the Riksdag.
