Lala Lajpat Rai was the Indian nationalist leader whose death was avenged by Bhagat Singh. Rai died of a heart attack after being injured in a lathi (baton) charge ordered by British senior police superintendent James Scott. Bhagat Singh and his associates targeted Scott but mistakenly killed John Saunders instead.
