The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), more commonly known as the Hare Krishna movement, was founded in New York City in 1966 by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Prabhupada was a Hindu monk who had spent many years in India studying the Vedic scriptures. He came to the United States in 1965 with the goal of spreading the teachings of Krishna consciousness to the West.
