William Anders earned a Master of Science in Nuclear Engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology in 1958. This degree was in addition to his Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering, which he earned from the University of Washington in 1955. Anders was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force in 1956, and he served as a pilot for the Air Force until 1963.
