The European Parliament has only sanctioned Russians believed to be complicit in the Magnitsky case once. This was in 2012, when it voted to freeze the assets of 26 individuals and companies, and ban them from entering the EU. The sanctions were imposed in response to the death of Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, who was imprisoned and tortured after exposing a large-scale tax fraud scheme.
