Bill English became Prime Minister of New Zealand on December 12, 2016, succeeding John Key. English had previously served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance under Key. He was elected leader of the National Party following Key's resignation and was subsequently appointed Prime Minister by Governor-General Jerry Mateparae.
