Ill health forced Bonar Law to resign as Prime Minister in 1921. He had been diagnosed with throat cancer in 1920 and underwent surgery, but his health continued to decline. By the end of 1921, he was too weak to carry on with his duties and stepped down, handing over the reins to Stanley Baldwin.
