Aleksandar Stamboliyski was the prime minister of Bulgaria from 1919 to 1923. He was a member of the Bulgarian Agrarian National Union, which was a populist political party. In 1923, Stamboliyski was overthrown in a coup d'état led by the Bulgarian military. The coup was supported by the right-wing political parties and the military. After the coup, Stamboliyski was arrested and executed.
