Boris Spassky was born on January 30, 1937, in Leningrad, Russia. He is a former world chess champion and is considered to be one of the greatest chess players of all time. Spassky won the World Chess Championship in 1969, defeating Tigran Petrosian. He lost the title to Anatoly Karpov in 1972. Spassky continued to play chess at a high level until his retirement in 2002.
