Lyatoshynsky taught music during the Second World War. In 1938, he was appointed director of the Odessa Conservatory, but he was dismissed after the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. He then moved to Moscow, where he taught at the Gnessin Institute of Music until the end of the war.
