Rick DeMont was the original winner of the 400 m Olympic freestyle event from which Brad Cooper won gold. DeMont set a new world record in the event in 1972, but his victory was later overturned after he tested positive for the banned substance ephedrine. He was subsequently stripped of his gold medal and banned from competition for four years.
