The Big East Conference was formed in 1979 as the original seven members broke away from the East Coast Conference. The Big East was originally composed of seven Roman Catholic universities from the East Coast. Since then, the conference has expanded to include 11 schools from across the country, including schools from the Midwest, South, and West.
