Brendan Gaughan professionally competed in two sports, football and boxing. He played college football at the University of San Diego and was drafted in the 13th round of the 2002 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions. He played in 12 games for the Lions over the course of two seasons, before being released in 2004. He then turned his attention to boxing and won his first professional fight in 2006.
