The Tánaiste is the Deputy Prime Minister of Ireland. The office was created in 1937 and is held by the leader of the second largest party in the Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Oireachtas (Irish parliament). The Tánaiste is appointed by the President of Ireland on the advice of the Taoiseach (Prime Minister).
