From 2008 to 2011, Brian Cowen was the Leader of Fianna Fáil, the Irish political party. He was elected to the Dáil in 1984 and served as Taoiseach, or Prime Minister, from 2008 to 2011. Cowen was a controversial figure who faced criticism for his handling of the Irish financial crisis. He resigned as Taoiseach in 2011 and was succeeded by Enda Kenny.
