Brian Cowen left office as Taoiseach after the general election in February 2011. He had been in office since 2008, and his time in office was marked by the economic crisis. The election was a major defeat for Cowen's party, Fianna Fáil, and he was replaced as Taoiseach by Enda Kenny.
