Brian Schmidt received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2011 for his work on the accelerating expansion of the universe. Schmidt and two other scientists, Saul Perlmutter and Adam Riess, led teams that used Type Ia supernovae to measure the expansion rate of the universe.
