Valenciennes was the club managed by Metsu in 1999. He joined the French club in June of that year, replacing Francis Decourrière. Under Metsu's leadership, Valenciennes finished 10th in the Ligue 2, the second tier of French football. Metsu left the club at the end of the season, moving on to manage Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates.
