The Afghan parliament suggested giving Rabbani the title of "Martyr of Peace". Rabbani was the former president of Afghanistan and leader of the Northern Alliance. He was assassinated in 2011 by a suicide bomber. The Afghan parliament unanimously voted to posthumously award Rabbani the title of "Martyr of Peace". The parliament said that Rabbani was a "great Afghan patriot" who "defended the country's sovereignty and independence".
