Hamid Karzai was chosen as the succeeding interim leader at the Bonn International Conference. The conference was held in December 2001, and it was the first international conference to be held after the overthrow of the Taliban regime. The conference was attended by representatives from over 40 countries, and it was chaired by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
