After Madras State was renamed Tamil Nadu on 14 January 1969, C. N. Annadurai served as the Chief Minister for 20 days before his death. He was elected to the post by the Madras Legislative Assembly on 20 January 1969 and was sworn in on 21 January. He died on 3 February 1969 at the age of 64.
