C. Rajagopalachari was an Indian lawyer, politician, independence activist, and statesman. He was one of the earliest political lieutenants of Mahatma Gandhi and a close associate of Jawaharlal Nehru. He served as the first Governor-General of independent India from 1948 to 1950, and as the Chief Minister of Madras state from 1952 to 1954.
