Pope Callixtus III, born Alfonso de Borgia, was the twenty-eighth pope of the Catholic Church. He was born in Xàtiva, Spain in 1378. He was elected pope on August 11, 1455, and died on August 6, 1458. His pontificate was notable for the start of the Spanish Inquisition and the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottoman Turks.
