Pope Pius II succeeded Pope Callixtus III as Pope in 1458. He was born Enea Silvio Piccolomini in Siena, Italy in 1405. He was a humanist scholar and diplomat before becoming pope. He is best known for his efforts to reunite the Catholic and Orthodox churches and for his support of the Renaissance. He died in Ancona, Italy in 1464.
