Giulio Raimondo Mazzarino, known as Cardinal Mazarin, was an Italian cardinal and statesman who served as the chief minister of France from 1642 until his death in 1661. Born into a noble family in Sicily, he rose through the ranks of the Catholic Church, becoming a cardinal in 1641.
