Carl Levin served six terms as a senator from the state of Michigan. He was first elected to the Senate in 1978 and served until 2015. He was a member of the Democratic Party and was a leading voice on foreign policy and defense issues. He also served as chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs.
