The Nobel Prize in Physics in 2001 was jointly awarded to Eric Allin Cornell and Wolfgang Ketterle for the achievement of Bose-Einstein condensation in dilute gases of alkali atoms, and to Carl Edwin Wieman for the same achievement in a Bose-Einstein condensate created in a gas of rubidium atoms.
