Scheele discovered several organic acids. In 1774 he found that citric acid is produced by the fermentation of sugar and in 1776 he isolated the first carboxylic acid, called oxalic acid, from wood sorrel. He also discovered tartaric acid, uric acid, hydrocyanic acid, and chlorine.
