Carlos Saura started his career in 1955, as an assistant director for Juan Antonio Bardem. He worked with Bardem on the films Muerte de un ciclista (Death of a Cyclist, 1955), Calle Mayor (Main Street, 1956), and Los inocentes (The Innocents, 1957). Saura then went on to direct his own films, starting with Los Golfos (The Hooligans, 1959).
