Carol Moseley Braun was a Democratic candidate in the 2004 United States presidential election. She was the first African-American woman to be elected to the United States Senate and the first African-American woman to run for President of the United States. She lost the Democratic nomination to John Kerry, who went on to lose the general election to incumbent President George W. Bush.
