Although she was an astronomer and geologist, Carolyn Shoemaker did not have degrees in science. She studied literature at Wellesley College. Her husband, Eugene Shoemaker, was a scientist who inspired her to pursue a career in astronomy. She worked with her husband on a number of projects, including the discovery of the Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet.
