Carolyn S. Shoemaker, an American astronomer and geologist, died in 2021 at the age of 84. She was best known for her work on the Shoemaker–Levy 9 comet, which collided with Jupiter in 1994. Shoemaker also discovered numerous asteroids and comets, and she was a pioneer in the field of planetary science. Her work has helped us to better understand the solar system and its history.
