Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 was a comet discovered in 1991 by Carolyn S. Shoemaker, Eugene M. Shoemaker, and David Levy. It is the only comet known to have impacted Jupiter. The comet broke up into 21 pieces as it approached Jupiter and the fragments impacted the planet over a period of six days in July 1994.
