Carolyn S. Shoemaker was hired as a research assistant at the California Institute of Technology in 1956. She had previously been working at the Palomar Observatory, where she was responsible for the development of the first asteroid survey. Her work at the California Institute of Technology led to the discovery of numerous new asteroids and comets.
