Carter G. Woodson was born in 1875 in New Canton, Virginia. He was an African-American historian, author, and journalist who was known for his work in promoting black history. Woodson founded the Association for the Study of African American Life and History in 1915, and in 1926 he established Negro History Week, which later became Black History Month.
