The National Basketball Association (NBA) was founded in 1946, as the Basketball Association of America (BAA). The BAA was the first major professional basketball league in the United States, and was formed in New York City by a group of businessmen led by Ned Irish. The league consisted of eight teams, and played its first season in 1946–47.
