The Republican People's Party (RPP), founded by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in 1923, is the oldest and one of the two major political parties in Turkey. Celâl Bayar, who later served as the third president of Turkey from 1950 to 1960, was an active member of the RPP and established branches of the party in the western cities of Izmir and Bursa during the early years of the republic.
